Madden, John
Born in Barrie Ontario, JOHN MADDEN was signed by the New Jersey Devils in 1997 after four fine seasons with the University of Michigan. He debuted as a Devil with four games in 1998-99, but his enthusiasm and exuberance earned him a full-time spot on the New Jersey wing for the 1999-2000 season. In just his second NHL season, MADDEN was recognized as the top defensive forward in the NHL. He scored 23 goals and added 15 assists, but MADDEN’s added worth was his fearless attention to the defensive zone. He also scored a team high three shorthanded goals. For his commitment to two-way play, JOHN MADDEN was the recipient of 2000-2001’s SELKE TROPHY. The runner-up to the trophy was that year’s Hart Trophy winner Joe Sakic of Colorado
